Russian bank cards in Thailand (2026): what works
Which Russian bank cards work in Thailand in 2026: Visa and Mastercard, Mir and UnionPay. What to expect at ATMs and in shops, how to test a card and what to do if it fails.
Published by OneEx editorial team. Sources, updates and corrections.
Short answer: Visa, Mastercard and Mir cards issued by Russian banks do not work in Thailand, neither at ATMs nor in shops. UnionPay from Rosselkhozbank is the one Russian card that usually works, mainly for ATM withdrawals; UnionPay of other Russian banks is mostly refused. A Thai ATM charges a foreign card about 220-250 THB per withdrawal on top of your own bank's fees. Treat any Russian card as a backup and arrange another way to get baht: rubles can be exchanged remotely from 5,000 RUB, with the rate fixed in the Telegram bot before you pay.
Card by card, as of October 2026
| Card | ATM | Shops | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa, Mastercard of a Russian bank | no | no | do not count on it |
| Mir | no | no | do not count on it |
| UnionPay, Rosselkhozbank | usually yes | hit and miss | test on a small amount, keep a backup |
| UnionPay, other Russian banks | mostly refused | mostly refused | ask your bank before you travel |
| A card from a bank in another country | yes, with a fee | yes | withdraw a larger sum less often |
| No card at all | cardless ATM code | cash | exchange rubles or USDT remotely |
This is a summary of bank statements and traveler reports, not a guarantee: acceptance depends on the issuing bank and on the particular ATM, and it changes. Always ask your bank about your own card.
Visa and Mastercard from Russian banks
Since the 2022 sanctions, Visa and Mastercard cards issued in Russia are cut off from the international networks. Thai ATMs and terminals decline them, in every city. Nothing you do at the machine changes that: repeated attempts only risk your bank blocking the card as suspicious.
Mir
Mir is not accepted by Thai banks, ATMs or shops. Do not plan a trip to Thailand around a Mir card, and do not count on it even for a small purchase.
UnionPay: the only Russian card that sometimes works
Rosselkhozbank says its UnionPay card works abroad, and traveler reports from 2025-2026 agree on the main points: cash withdrawals at ATMs usually go through, while shop terminals accept the card in one place and reject it in the next. Travelers also report that a yuan card is accepted more reliably than a ruble one. If your card is in rubles, the bank converts to baht at its own rate; if it is in yuan, buy the yuan in the app before the trip. UnionPay cards of other Russian banks, including those hit by sanctions, are mostly declined.
How to test a UnionPay card:
- Before the trip, ask the bank whether the card works in Thailand and what the foreign withdrawal limit and fees are.
- On the first day withdraw a small amount at an ATM with the UnionPay logo, not the sum you need for the whole stay.
- If the machine offers to charge you in rubles, choose baht, otherwise the machine sets the conversion.
- If one ATM declines, try one at another bank, but no more than two or three attempts a day.
What a Thai ATM costs
Any foreign card pays a flat fee per withdrawal at a Thai ATM, about 220-250 THB per withdrawal, and your own bank may add its own. That is why one larger withdrawal is cheaper than several small ones. The dated bank schedule and the other limits are in ATM fees in Thailand.
If no card works: baht without a card
Do not leave it for the day your card fails. The usual route is to move rubles inside Russia and collect baht in Thailand:
- Write the amount and the city to the bot.
- The manager replies with the rate, the baht amount, the payout method and the time. The fee is included in the rate.
- Pay only to the details sent for your current request, from your own Russian bank account.
- After the payment is confirmed you get a code and the exact amount for a cardless ATM, or a courier brings the cash (Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya).
Write your amount to the Telegram bot. The rate depends on the amount and is fixed in the bot before you pay.
All the options side by side, including cash dollars and cards from other countries, are in how to send money from Russia to Thailand; the cases where you have no card at all are in cash in Thailand without a card.
In short
- Russian Visa, Mastercard and Mir: do not work in Thailand.
- UnionPay of Rosselkhozbank: usually works at ATMs, unreliable in shops; other banks' UnionPay is mostly refused.
- Test any card on a small amount on day one and keep a second source of baht.
- Foreign cards pay a flat ATM fee per withdrawal, so withdraw less often and more at a time.
FAQ
Does Mir work in Thailand in 2026?
No. Mir cards are not accepted by Thai banks, ATMs or shops, so do not plan a trip around one.
Do Russian Visa and Mastercard work in Thailand?
No. Cards of these networks issued by Russian banks have been cut off from international payments since 2022 sanctions and are declined at Thai ATMs and in shops, in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and on the islands alike.
Does UnionPay from Rosselkhozbank work in Thailand?
It is the most likely Russian card to work: the bank states that the card works abroad, and many travelers report successful ATM withdrawals. Shop terminals are hit and miss. Acceptance depends on the issuing bank, on the particular ATM and changes over time, so test it on a small amount on the first day and keep a backup.
Do UnionPay cards of other Russian banks work?
Mostly not. Many foreign banks and payment partners refuse cards of Russian banks under sanctions, and the list of such banks changes. Ask your bank directly before you travel.
What if my card is blocked after a failed withdrawal?
Stop trying different ATMs one after another, which can make a block worse. Write to your bank through its app or chat, ask for the reason and for the restriction on foreign operations to be lifted. Meanwhile get baht another way, for example a cardless ATM code or a courier.
How do I get baht if none of my cards work?
Move rubles inside Russia and collect baht in Thailand. With OneEx you pay from your own Russian bank account and receive cash at a cardless ATM or from a courier; the method, time and final amount are confirmed before you pay. The minimum is the equivalent of 5,000 RUB.
